The publication originally debuted in London in March 1965. By September 1969, Guccione launched the American edition, which quickly grew into his flagship brand. While other global editions emerged through various franchise agreements, they ultimately experienced mixed success over the decades. From its inception, the magazine directly challenged Playboy by offering more explicit nude photography and a bolder editorial style.

The rise of the internet severely impacted the print publication's survival. The British edition shut down in 1999, followed by a brief, unsuccessful revival attempt in 2001. Meanwhile, the American version tried to survive by pivoting to hardcore content between 1997 and 2004. New ownership took over in 2005 and returned the magazine to a softcore format, but printing frequency steadily declined. By 2020, production dropped to only five issues, and the final regular American print issue was published in 2023.

The brand currently belongs to the Los Angeles–based company Penthouse World Media. A year after print production stopped, the new owners announced plans to bring the magazine back. In early 2026, the company reiterated that a print relaunch remains actively in development.

#penthouse #bobguccione
